There is a lot of mystery surrounding Mormon temple weddings. No cameras are allowed during the event; only strict followers of the church attend the ceremony. A sacred temple wedding takes place in one of the Mormon holy temples in the world, and marriage is considered for eternity, not “until death do us part.” A Mormon civil wedding takes place in a local meeting house where relatives can attend. Mormons discourage civil weddings since they are believed to only last until death.
A couple that has undertaken a civil wedding in America will have to wait one year before holding a sealing ceremony, despite being active and worthy church members. Sealing is making the relationship between a wife and a husband, or a child and a parent eternal in a ceremony performed in the sacred temple and officiated by the Mormon priests. Couples are allowed to wed in the holy temple after passing a worthiness interview conducted by the bishop, who also offers them counsel about marriage. However, couples who had a civil wedding will still have to wait for a whole year before they seal the marriage for eternity, despite securing a recommendation from the bishop.
A couple can only lay claim on children who were born when they were civilly married when they go through the sealing the ceremony, since such children are not born in covenant. Laying a claim means that the family will be reunited with the children in the afterlife. Since Mormons believe families should last for eternity, such children are dressed in white and sealed to the couple during the temple wedding ceremony. After this sealing ceremony, the couple can claim their children after resurrection.
Mormons believe that young people should maintain chastity before marriage. When selecting a life mate, young Mormons are taught to pair up with another Mormon of opposite gender and seal the ceremony in a temple. A couple that chooses a civil ceremony is perceived by fellow ward members to have committed a sin that prevented them from holding a temple wedding.
According to the former Mormon Church president, Joseph Fielding Smith, unless young people who had a civil wedding repented immediately, they would be cut off from exaltation within God’s celestial kingdom, as stated in the LDS Stake President Blog. The LDS Stake President Blog states that, If these people proved their worthiness despite this great sin, they would enter the kingdom as servants, as opposed to devout Mormons who will enter the top heavens, where they will turn into rulers and gods of their own universes.
